Things To Do in Newcastle under Lyme 

Enjoy acclaimed productions, music and comedy at the New Vic Theatre, the first purpose-built theatre-in-the-round in Europe, where a unique view of the action is guaranteed. 

Explore Newcastle’s history in the Brampton Museum’s eye-opening exhibitions and fascinating artefacts, or discover local mining heritage at the Apedale Valley, with its museum, mine tours and light railway. 

Learn about Philip Astley, Father of the Modern Circus, born in the borough in 1742, at The Philip Astley Centre and each summer at The Homecoming celebration, a lively mix of street theatre, circus acts, and magic shows. 

Relish the floral displays and admire the statues of Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth II in the town centre Queens Gardens, enjoy the green space and mature trees of Brampton Park or escape to the wide open spaces of Apedale Country Park, Silverdale Country Park and Handford Hills. 

Head to the nearby Dorothy Clive Garden created in the 1940s by Colonel Harry Clive as a living memorial to his beloved wife Dorothy, the garden is set in a 12 acre site and is at its best in the Spring and early Summer when the rhododendrons and azaleas are in full bloom. 

Close to the borough’s other town Kidsgrove you’ll find local landmark Mow Cop Castle.  Actually a folly, the castle sits high on a ridge which forms the boundary between Staffordshire and Cheshire and marks the start of the Staffordshire Way. Brave the steep path to the top and you’ll be rewarded with stunning panoramic views.
